1. 確定基金管理的投資目標。不同的基金投資目標對應不同的風險和收益狀況，高收益目標需要承擔較高的市場風險。基金的投資目標大致分為三類，第一類是追求長期的資本增值，即成長型基金目標；第二類是追求當期收入和絕對分紅收益，即價值型基金目標；第三類是兼顧長期資本增值和當期收入，即平衡型基金目標。

2．確定證券組合類型。基金經理按照所公佈的基金契約的要求進行基金投資於管理，如將較大的資金比例投入某些看好行業、或某些類型的上市公司等，使整個證券組合具有某種明顯的行業特徵和風險收益特徵。

3. 確定證券投資分散化的程度。基金投資分散化的程度由該基金所持證券的種類數和基金總值中不同類型證券的比重決定，不同基金有着不同的分散投資政策，基金投資的分散程度越強，基金投資組合的整體風險越小，個股異常波動對基金收益的影響也越小。

4. 確定股票、國債、現金的組合比例。基金經理根據對股票市場、國債市場價格趨勢的研究判斷，經常在股票、國債和貨幣市場之間進行資本轉移，不斷調整各自倉位的大小以應對未來變化的不確定性。 5. 正確選擇未來經營看好的上市公司進行投資。基金經理很重要的工作是花在企業調研和財務分析上，挑選出有發展潛質、市價被低估的上市公司股票，並在市場其他投資者買入前搶先一步進入市場是基金管理制勝的基本原則。出色的選股擇時能力是基金經理眼光和水平的反映，也是基金公司整體研究實力的體現
