From Walls to Bridges

I'm studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city.

Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes through half of our country. They built walls to ward off enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public. I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and I've loved them since my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world.

My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city. My classmates and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads. Suddenly an international student asked me, “Where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?”

“We're already in the Eastern Suburbs,” I replied.

He seemed taken aback, “I thought you Chinese have walls for everything.” His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails,” while I insisted that the Eastern Suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls.

That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instance, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede China's development.

Let me give you an example.

A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, “You can't borrow this book, you are not a student here.” In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf.

At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experience will not be repeated. Barriers will be replaced by bridges. Through an inter-library loan system, we will have access to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.

I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China's tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their roles in the modern world.

And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also many schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

It is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise (鄙視) ourselves. We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly： we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (雄心) is even bigger, our challenges (挑戰) are great, but our will is even greater.

I am Chinese. I have inherited (繼承) black hair and black eyes. I have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. I have also taken over responsibility. I am sure, that wherever I go, whatever I do, I shall never forget that I am Chinese!

一、活動背景

當歲月的車輪駛過20xx，在這不尋常的一年裏，有多少悲壯，有多少感動，有多少夢想，有多少光榮，銘記在我們的心裏，寫進了共和國的歷史畫卷裏。這一路的艱辛坎坷，無一不是我們的祖國逐步富強的印記。而在經濟全球化，中國一步步走向國際的今天，英語，無疑成了我們最必不可少的工具，唯有用英語武裝自己，才能讓世界更加了解中國，讓我們的祖國，在國際化的道路上越走越穩，越走越強。

我校，中南財經政法大學，是國家“211工程”重點建設高校之一，近幾年來，我校迅速發展，顯示出了極大的潛力，全校師生員工團結一致，同心同德，努力把我校建設成為全國一流的人文社會科學大學。我校是一塊充滿朝氣的沃土，治學嚴謹又不失活潑。天之驕子的大學生們，以朝氣蓬勃的精神面貌，懷揣着理想，不斷用汗水澆灌着自己的夢想；擁有社會責任心的桃李們，一直都在關心國家的前途和命運。

二、活動主題——OnTheJourney

人生是一條漫長的旅途，每個人都是天生的旅人。旅行的意義就在於，你永遠不知道下一站你將在哪裏，你會遇見什麼樣的事物，未知的未來激勵着我們不斷的前行，探索。在旅途中，我們會看見漫山兀自盛放的野花；我們會聽到夜鶯嘴裏飛出的婉轉歌聲；我們會聞到久經沉澱的檀香；有時我們必須獨自面對密佈的荊棘；更多的時候我們會與同行的朋友並肩作戰，踏浪前行，看到那一盞導航燈在迷霧裏漸漸清晰。

20xx年，冬奧會賽道上中國運動健兒們的身影劃破長空落入只屬於他們的舞池，賽場上冉冉升起的五星紅旗染紅了皚皚的冰雪；世博拉起帷幕，人類文明之大成齊聚上海，叩響上海和中國的騰飛之門。

然而，我們和中國都還在路上。

有時，我們都太專注於趕路，忘記在自己的行囊中留下了美好的回憶，忘記回頭看看曾經踩下的腳印，感受曾經留下的心情。為此，外語協會將中南財經政法大學外國語學院英語文化節之湖北省大學生“MyStory”英語演講大賽主題定為OnTheJourney，希望有社會責任感的大學生關注中國的命運，説出自己同中國的成長故事，把自己旅途中的精彩同每一個人分享，在夏夜習習的涼風和淡淡的回憶中做短暫的停留休整後，我們再重新啟程，我們知道，在充滿希望和未知的20xx年，我們會經歷更多令人心驚動魄的美麗。

三、活動口號——由此開始，隨處可往（startheregoanywhere)

有一個青年，天生就是個舞者，但他現在並不打算開始跳舞，他聽説有一個就羅陀斯的地方，那裏是跳舞者的天堂，那裏開滿玫瑰花，從此他就踏上了尋找羅陀斯之旅。一日，他遇見一位老者，他向老者説明來意，詢問羅陀斯在哪裏？這位老者答道：“這裏就是羅陀斯！就在這裏跳舞，這裏有玫瑰花，就在這裏跳舞！”

由此開始，隨處可往

四、活動目的

1、由我校外國語學院主辦、外語協會承辦舉行的“中南財經政法大學外國語學院英語文化節暨第六屆湖北省大學生MYSTORY英語演講大賽”旨在進一步改善我校英語學習氛圍的同時，藉此契機加強與湖北省其他高校溝通和交流，並協作搭建一個可以讓有夢想、有志向的大學生來展示自己、提高自己的平台。

2、本屆英語演講大賽的主題：ONTHEJOURNEY更是激勵着每一個正努力前進中的同學要在人生的旅途中不斷充實自己，提高自己。而本次活動的舉辦也正是為了能夠讓同學們在比賽中逐漸提高自己的能力，充實自己的業餘生活。

3、開展此類學術性的活動，我們不僅可以提高學生英語學習的積極性，從而推進我校的英語教學工作，而且我們還能在此過程中與湖北其他高校加強溝通和聯繫，在溝通和聯繫中共同進步、共同發展。同時，本次活動的舉行也有助於今後各高校之間開展其他學術交流和合作。

五、可行性分析

1、本次活動在我校外國語學院的幫助和支持下，擴大了mystory的活動影響力，能吸引更多的同學積極參與。同時，有外國語學院的。加入，能讓外語協會的全體成員更有信心更加認真負責的完成mystory的順利進行。

2、本屆mystory擴大了比賽範圍，由本校內舉辦擴大為在湖北大學生共同的文化節日，增強了活動的號召力，擴寬了自我展現的平台，對在校大學生更加具有吸引力。

3、比賽的評審將會由學校的資深老師和外教擔任，同時還很可能會引進大眾評審，保證了比賽的公正性和權威性。

4、學習英語已成為當代大學生乃至全社會的一種時尚，順應時代潮流，大力開展此次活動，為本校大學生提供了鍛鍊英語口才，展現個人風採的平台。

5、外語協會已經有十餘年的歷史，不斷的成長，使其在舉辦比賽方面擁有較為成熟的經驗和方法。具有舉辦大型比賽的實力。

八、活動流程

本次大賽分為報名、預賽、初賽、複賽和決賽五個環節，以下分別就每個環節的比賽流程加以説明。

（一）、報名

1、時間：3月17日至3月19日

2、地點：初步設濱湖、圖書館前和環湖三個報名點。

（二）、預賽

1、時間：3月25日晚6：30至8：30

2、要求：每位選手準備1分鐘左右的演講，內容可自行決定。當天的比賽順序按照選手到場的簽到順序排列。

3、選拔標準：預賽實行批准制，評委可根據選手表現情況自行打斷演講，並決定選手是否進入初賽。三位評委中若有兩名錶示同意，則該選手可進入初賽。

4、賽場設定：3個賽場，每場中3位評委。預賽中選取50人進入初賽。

（三）、初賽

1、時間：4月8日晚6：30至8：30

2、要求：

（1）每位選手準備3分鐘的演講，內容必須結合大賽主題且演講時須脱稿。

（2）評委就選手演講內容進行提問，每位選手作1分鐘以內的問答。

（3）比賽時選手按照事先的編號順序進行。

3、選拔標準：初賽實行批准制，評委根據選手演講和作答情況綜合評審，三位中若有兩位表示同意，則該選手可進入複賽。

4、賽場設定：兩個賽場，每場中3位評委。複賽按照50進30進行淘汰。

（四）、複賽

1、時間：5月6日晚6：30至8：30

2、要求：

（1）每位選手準備2分鐘的演講，內容必須結合大賽主題且演講時須脱稿。

（2）選手隨機抽一副圖片進行陳述，時間不超過2分鐘。後一名選手在前一名選手作看圖陳述時進行自己的準備。

（3）比賽時選手按照事先的編號順序進行。

3、選拔標準：複賽實行評分制，每位評委根據選手演講和陳述情況打兩個分數計算出每位評委的總分後取平均值。按照得分高低排列名次。排名前十名的選手可進入決賽。

4、賽場設定：一個賽場，5位評委。複賽按照30進10進行淘汰。

（五）、決賽

1、時間：5月25日晚6：30至8：30

2、要求：決賽分為三輪進行

第一輪：

（1）、每位選手準備2分鐘的演講，內容必須結合大賽主題且演講時須脱稿。評委根劇選手演講情況進行分別進行打分，並當場排名。

（2）、根據演講的排名情況，第一名選手直接晉級第三輪，最後一名選手被淘汰，得優秀獎。其餘八名選手進入第二輪。

第二輪：選手較量賽

（1）、隨機抽取選手編號將八名選手分為4組。

（2）、每組抽取屏幕上的一個數字，每個數字後有一道場景題，選手經過準備後須就該場景作2分鐘以內的自由對話（freetalk環節）。

（3）、場內的9名大眾評審分別給每組中自己喜歡那位選手投票，每組中得票高的4名選手進入第三輪，得票低的4名選手進入“復活環節”。

（4）“復活環節”：即4名選手分別給出一句話的自我陳述或總結，由在座評委討論決定其中1名可“復活”並進入第三輪。未復活的3名選手被淘汰，得優秀獎。

第三輪：

（1）、最終有6名選手晉級，按照持有號碼從大到小排列的順序依次抽取一道題，作2分鐘之內的即興演講。

（2）、評委就每位選手的即興演講和之前的表現打兩個分數並計算總分，將每位評委的總分進行合計後取平均值。

（3）、按照最終得分高低將6名選手排名，最後決出一等獎1名，二等獎2名，三等獎3名。

（4）、給第一輪中排名第一的選手頒發“最佳演講者”稱號。

（一）比賽規則

1、比賽以公平公正為原則，以豐富和活躍校園生活、促進交流與溝通為宗旨。

2、大賽分為定題演講（自我介紹和話題演講），即興演講個環節。依據評委打分計算出成績，最後頒發一等獎、二等獎、三等獎和參與獎。

（二）活動流程

1、主持人開場（介紹選手情況，到場評委，嘉賓，流程評分制及與觀眾互動形式）

每位選手先進行較全面的自我介紹，後進行演講、時限3~5分鐘

So I pretend to understand the joke in another party, I saw everyone laugh and I laugh too in 5 seconds later. My home stay was surprised about that and asked me “do you understand?”， and I answered “no”， “So why do you laugh?” ”because I do not want to be embarrassed”!

But as I receive this award today, I want to thank to them, because they encourage me to be involved with the committee rather than staying in at home, play computer and speak Chinese.

When I came to Wantirna College first time, I met liz collar who is international student coordinator. She is very kind to me, and she encourage me join SRC, I went to SRC meetings regularly all the time, but I didn’t even know what SRC was! That is the reason why I told her, I don’t want to go to SRC anymore. But she said “why not? You should go and you have to go!”I asked” why?” she said:” because I said so!”

But as ii receive this award today, I want to thank her. She helps me a lot.

Truth be told, I am not the best student in Wantirna College, but I appreciate this award and I will try my best in future.

I think I got 10 seconds left, I want to thank to Les and Vera who is my lovely home stay, thanks to Liz collar who is international student coordinator, I strongly want to thank to my mother, because she support me and gave me the opportunity to come to Australia. 二、活動目的：為了豐富同學們的校園文化生活，激發同學們對英語學習的熱情，提高同學們的英語口語表達能力，同時也為同學們提供了一個展示自我的平台。英語角協會，經貿與管理系決定合力策劃舉辦趣味英語演講比賽。

本次趣味英語演講比賽旨在提高口語表達能力，形式多樣，可以演講、朗誦、小品、話劇和歌曲等。

五、活動流程：

本次活動共分為初賽和決賽兩個環節。

（一）初賽：

時間：xx年四月25、26。

地點：九樓大學生活動中心。

形式：召集所有報名選手進行抽籤，決定出場順序，對每位（隊）選手的演講有嚴格的時間限制（5分鐘），根據相應的評分規則評選出12名選手參與決賽。

全國英語演講比賽 篇八

i have the answer to a question that we've all asked. the question is, why is it that the letter x represents the unknown? now i know we learned that in math class, but now it's everywhere in the culture -- the x prize, the x-files, project x, tedx. where'd that come from?

about six years ago i decided that i would learn arabic, which turns out to be a supremely logical language. to write a word or a phrase or a sentence in arabic is like crafting an equation, because every part is extremely precise and carries a lot of information. that's one of the reasons so much of what we've come to think of as western science and mathematics and engineering was really worked out in the first few centuries of the common era by the persians and the arabs and the turks.

this includes the little system in arabic called al-jebra. and al-jebr roughly translates to “the system for reconciling disparate parts.“ al-jebr finally came into english as algebra. one example among many.

the arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom finally made their way to europe -- which is to say spain -- in the 11th and 12th centuries. and when they arrived there was tremendous interest in translating this wisdom into a european language.

but there were problems. one problem is there are some sounds in arabic that just don't make it through a european voice box without lots of practice. trust me on that one. also, those very sounds tend not to be represented by the characters that are available in european languages.

here's one of the culprits. this is the letter sheen, and it makes the sound we think of as sh -- “sh.“ it's also the very first letter of the word shalan, which means “something“ just like the the english word “something“ -- some undefined, unknown thing.

now in arabic, we can make this definite by adding the definite article “al.“ so this is al-shalan -- the unknown thing. and this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics, such as this 10th century derivation of proofs.

the problem for the medieval spanish scholars who were tasked with translating this material is that the letter sheen and the word shalan can't be rendered into spanish because spanish doesn't have that sh, that “sh“ sound. so by convention, they created a rule in which they borrowed the ck sound, “ck“ sound, from the classical greek in the form of the letter kai.

later when this material was translated into a common european language, which is to say latin, they simply replaced the greek kai with the latin x. and once that happened, once this material was in latin, it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks for almost 600 years.

but now we have the answer to our question. why is it that x is the unknown? x is the unknown because you can't say “sh“ in spanish. (laughter) and i thought that was worth sharing.

為了慶祝蘇州市職業大學成立30 週年，同時為了給同學們一個更好的展現自己風采的舞台，激發廣大同學學習英語的熱情，提高同學對英語口語的興趣，營造一個良好的英語學習氛圍，為更多的同學提供一個盡情揮灑創意，展現英語風采的舞台，管理工程系英語愛好者協會在得到老師和同學的支持下，於4月20日舉行了“母校風采”英語演講比賽，此次比賽主要針對在校大一大二的學生。大一學生參加的積極性很高，報名人數多，在我係大一學生新生中有一定的影響力，比賽設有多種獎項，給選手們提供了更多的表現機會，體現“公正，公開”的比賽原則。比賽榮幸地邀請了外籍老師John和Christing，團委學生會副主席沈金龍作為本次演講比賽的評委，並且邀請外語系朱佳和管理系王慧芳作為本次比賽的主持人。英語愛好者協會會長和前任會長也列席觀看。

對此次決賽之前，我部各班幹事到各班進行宣傳組織各班學生到賽場進行觀看，以擴大演講比賽的影響力。在接到系部的指示後，傾力策劃並組織了這次活動的賽事。在學生會學習部的統籌下，把比賽中的各個環節與組織部、文藝部、宣傳部合作，如此細緻的分工合作，為本次比賽順利進行奠定了基礎。

這次比賽由演講和才藝表演2個部分組成。在第一部分，大家表現得非常精彩，有的選手擁有出色的語音、語調；有的選手擁有激情和説服力；有的選手展示了自信的力量。大家都很好地傳達了本次比賽的主題。同時也調動了同學們對學習英語的興趣，提高同學們的英語口語能力和實用能力。

在正式比賽之前為體現“公平”原則，組織各參賽選手進行抽籤，已決定各選手上場順序。決賽結束後，比賽中參賽選手準備很充分，演講也很投入，並且充分表現出了自我的特色，讓觀眾深深地領略了他們瀟灑的口語風采，值得一提的是有一位參賽選手主動提出問題與外教交流。評委對選手的表現進行了點評，指出了個選手在比賽過程中的不足和缺點，提出對同學們的期望，以及對同學們的鼓勵，。現場的5位評委依公正的態度為每位參賽選手打分。其中有6位同學表現突出，依流利，純正口語征服了評委和觀眾，在眾多參賽選手當中脱穎而出，

經過評委的評比打分，最終角逐出：一等獎1名，二等獎2名，三等獎3名，最佳人氣獎1名，最佳才藝獎1名，以及優秀獎若干名。他們分別是

此次演講比賽詣在提高規範同學們的口語，與此同時，也鍛鍊了同學們的英語表述能力，使同學們積累了演講比賽的經驗，為此以後的大型演講比賽提供了可能，通過這次比賽，不僅僅讓同學們發揮了自己的潛能，向所有人展示了自己，而且為今後的專業性比賽奠定了基礎。

同時此次演講比賽的成功舉行，使我社全體幹事對自己的工作進一步了認識和了解，對今後的工作充滿了自信和動力，最後真誠地感謝系領導系學生會領導及所有同學對本次活動的支持，是你們的支持才有了此次活動的成功舉辦。

本屆英語演講比賽參賽選手水平普遍較高，他們在台上或抑揚頓挫，或激情澎湃。為保證選手們得到專業、公正的評判，比賽過程中，我們邀請的兩位外教，他們不僅為選手們作出了專業評論，還使整場比賽在輕鬆活躍的氣氛中順利進行。

綜上終結，本次英語演講賽之所以能取的這麼大的成功，主要得益於事先周密的安排，社團各部之間的齊心協力，同學們的積極參與以及學校團委的大力關心和支持，這是一次成功的比賽，是一次圓滿的比賽！不僅讓同學們從中學到了確實有用的東西，而且也為我校營造學習英語的良好氛圍出了一份力，使我校呈現出更高的學習英語的浪潮。它對我們英語愛好者協會以後怎麼樣開展活動，開展什麼樣的活動有着重大的指導意義，為我們今後的工作打下了堅實的基礎！

In summer, the banyan tree branches more lush and green, like the jade. We often to the banyan tree shade and playing. Banyan tree zhefengdangyu for us, for we are blocking the sun's radiation. The banyan tree is blocking our view of the blue sky, looked from a distance, like a big green umbrella, brings us a cool.

Autumn, banyan tree leaves turn yellow, autumn mother-in-law deeply breathed a sigh of relief. Banyan tree mother left their mother's arms, look! How sad they are! When I stepped on banyan tree after mother's baby, they will "sasha vujacic" to cry, don't they know it hurt? When I stepped on some hesitation, afraid to hurt it.
