You might think that Western students are less shy when it comes to mingling with theopposite sex, but the truth is that pupils in the UK can feel just as awkward. Britons areactually quite reserved and being at university can make them feel out of their comfort zone. Everyone finds it difficult to talk to the other gender on campus.

你可能認為西方國家的學生在面對異性時會更放得開，但事實上在英國，學生們對此也是一樣手足無措。英國人實際上很保守，而大學生活也令他們脱離了自己的“自在區”。所有人都會覺得在校園中與異性交談是件難事。

However, there is a way of dealing with this shyness in Britain, and it is called “Freshers Week”. Freshers Week is designed to help people socialize and lose their inhibitions. It is a one-weeklong party for first year students to welcome them before lectures and coursework begin.

而在英國，人們找到了克服這種害羞心理的方法，那就是“新生周”。開辦“新生周”的目的是為了幫助人們進行社交活動，擺脱情感阻力。對於大一學生而言，這是在正式上課之前舉行的一場迎新派對，為期一週。

I remember my first week at university - it was terrifying. I looked at the schedule for FreshersWeek and was amazed at how much was planned. Every hall of residence organizes its ownevents to help students become friends with the people they live with. My hall was called “Goldney Hall” and the week ahead included a talent show, a comedy night, and themedparties, including one for which we had to dress up as golfers.

我對自己第一週的大學生活記憶猶新，那真是次恐怖的經歷。我盯着迎新周的日程表，驚訝於怎麼會有如此多的活動。每一棟學生公寓都各自組織的活動，來幫助那些同住一個屋檐下的學生們打成一片。我住在“古丹尼學生公寓”，接下來一週的活動包括一場達人秀、一場喜劇之夜演出，以及多場主題派對，其中的一場我們必須裝扮成高爾夫球員。

The first event I went to was a school kids party at which everyone dressed up as if they were inschool. This party encouraged me to talk to all the people on my floor. One boy, who livedopposite my room, was very handsome and I felt nervous speaking to him at first. But when wemet at the party dressed in silly school outfits, I remember feeling a lot more relaxed speakingto him.

我參加的第一場活動是個校園童趣派對，每個人都要打扮成上學的樣子。這場派對也讓我鼓起勇氣和同住一層樓的人交談。有個住在我對面寢室的男孩很帥，起初跟他説話讓我很緊張。但當我們身着傻傻的校服在派對上碰面時，我記得那時的聊天要輕鬆多了。

It sounds strange, but drinking and dressing up seems to be how Britons overcome theirshyness at university. My Freshers Week was hectic, but I managed to forget how scared I was.

這聽起來可能有點怪，但飲酒以及化裝舞會似乎成為英國大學生克服害羞心理的法寶。儘管新生周讓我忙得不可開交，但卻讓我將那些擔驚受怕拋到了腦後。

One thing’s for sure: nothing helps you lose your inhibitions quite like dressing up as a golfer – complete with a golf club, checked hat and tweed jacket!

有一點可以肯定，那就是：當你變身高爾夫球手“武裝”上高爾夫球棍、格子帽和花呢夾克時，沒有什麼比這樣更能讓你拋卻羞怯感了!

For some students, their major may serve as a path to a lifelong career. For others, their majoronly represents a transient academic interest.

對於一些學生而言，他們所學專業可能是通向畢生職業之路。對於其他人而言，他們的專業可能只是代表了一種短暫的學術興趣。

According to a recent career survey released by Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, about 45 percent of graduate students work in an area unrelated to their major.

根據北京市教委最新的一項職場調查顯示，約45%的畢業生其工作領域與所學專業完全不對口。

When they first started university, only 25 percent of them were satisfied with their major, while 17 percent were unsatisfied with their curriculum.

剛升入大學時，他們其中只有25%的人滿意自己的專業，而17%的人對自己的課程感到不滿意。

Cao Xuelin, 27, an online game designer at Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Co Ltd, studied apurely theoretic discipline but now finds himself working in a very pragmatic industry.

27歲的曹學林(音譯)是騰訊科技(深圳)有限公司的一名網遊設計師。儘管上學時他學的都是些純粹的理論學科，如今卻在一個非常務實的行業中工作。

“I studied mathematics at university, not computer science, but I began to work as a softwaredesigner after my graduation,” said Cao, who initially thought he would become a mathteacher or work for a research institute.

曹學林説：“我大學時學的是數學，並不是計算機科學，然而畢業後我的第一份工作竟是軟件設計師。”他原本以為自己會成為一名數學老師，或者去一家研究機構工作

It is difficult finding a job relating to a specific major, especially when your major is regardedas highly “impractical”. In fact, many of Cao’s classmates became finance analysts or evenwork in public relations.

想找到份與專業對口的工作絕非易事，尤其當你的專業被認為嚴重不實用的時候。事實上，曹學林的很多同學都成為了金融分析師，或就職於公關行業。

“Assuming a job has to be tied directly to your major is a very old-fashioned way of thinking. Employers’ attitudes have changed completely,” said Wang Xiaojun, HR director at GeneralElectric Company.

通用電氣公司人力資源部總監王曉軍表示：“想找一份與專業對口的工作，這是種十分過時的想法了。用人單位的態度已經徹底發生了轉變。”

“Knowledge, adaptability, practical work experience and the ability to analyze from a well-rounded perspective are more important to employers than your major.”

“對於用人單位而言，知識、適應能力、實際工作經驗以及縝密周到的分析能力遠比你的專業重要得多。”

Sometimes, when you engage in a different field of work, you may not even realize how muchyour college major is helping you. Chen Juan, 24, a psychology major from Beijing NormalUniversity, now works for Ogilvy & Mather Advertising as a project manager.

有時，當身處一份完全不同的工作領域中時，你甚至不會意識到你的大學專業幫了你多少忙。24的陳娟(音譯)畢業於北京師範大學心理學專業，現在奧美廣告公司任項目經理。

“Psychology helps a lot at work because my current job involves a lot of consumer strategy. Italso requires the ability to do research and data analysis, which I honed during my studies,” she said. As a result, when Chen looks at the resumes of potential hires, she doesn’t restrictherself to looking at those with a major specifically relating to advertising.

她表示：“在工作上心理學很有幫助，因為我現在的工作涉及到很多的消費者策略。同時需要你具備調研以及數據分析的能力，這些正是我在上學期間不斷磨練的內容。”因此，陳娟在翻閲潛在員工的簡歷時，她不會只關注那些專業與廣告行業對口的人。

“Even if a candidate majored in biology, I would only consider their genuine interest in theadvertising and marketing industry.”

“即使應聘者就讀於生物專業，我也只看重他們對廣告和營銷行業是否真正有興趣。”

So, how should students deal with the potential discord between their major and career? Onepossibility is to study across a wide range, or to foster interests in different areas.

所以，學生們要如何應對專業與工作不對口這一問題呢?有一種可能是廣泛涉獵各種知識，或是去培養你在不同領域的興趣。

“If you major in mathematics, you can study finance and computer programming in your sparetime,” Cao said. “If you combine them with your strategic thinking or data analysis skills, itcan make you more flexible during job-hunting.”

曹學林説：“如果你的專業是數學，你可以利用課餘時間來學習一些金融與計算機編程方面的只是。如果你將它們與你的戰略性思維或數據分析技巧融合起來，這將會使你在求職時更加遊刃有餘。”

An increasing number of training courses are teaching students skills to start their careers, suchas secretaries or accountants. Such training is an opportunity to turn study into a lifelongcause.

傳授學生們職場新人技巧的培訓課程越來越多，例如祕書或會計類的課程。這類的培訓讓你有機會將學業轉變為畢生事業。

Last month, the Chinese University of Hong Kong announced a variety of professional, general and distance learning programs with the School of Continuing and Professional Studiesand the Shenzhen Research Institute.

上個月，香港中文大學深圳研究院專業進修中心開設了多種多樣的專業性、常規類以及遠程課程。

The courses on offer cover a wide range of disciplines, including management, social sciences, information technology and the environment.

所開設的課程涵蓋管理類、社會科學、信息科技以及環境等多個學科。

“We introduced them with the aim of increasing people’s access to continuing, lifelongeducation,” said Dr Ella P. O. Chan, director of the School of Continuing and ProfessionalStudies.

香港中文大學專業進修學院陳寶安博士表示：“我們之所以引進這些課程，旨在讓更多人去接受繼續教育與終身教育。”

Above all, Zhu Hong, director of the Employment Guidance Center at Nankai University, believes that studying one’s major well still matters. “Explore, have fun, and consult yourfaculty, friends and family when in need of guidance.”

值得一提的是，南開大學就業指導中心主任硃紅(音譯)認為學好專業知識仍然很關鍵。“探索、享樂，當需要指導時，可以向老師、朋友以及家人諮詢。”
